Basic Derivative Rules

Master the foundational rules for finding derivatives

The Power Rule is the most-used derivative shortcut. Once you master it, you can differentiate any polynomial instantly.

1The Power Rule

\frac{d}{dx}\left[x^n\right] = n \cdot x^{n-1}

Bring the exponent down, reduce it by one.

2Example 1

\frac{d}{dx}\left[x^3\right] = 3x^2

n = 3, so we get 3x³⁻¹ = 3x²

3Example 2

\frac{d}{dx}\left[5x^4\right] = 20x^3

Constants multiply through: 5 · 4 = 20
