Sometimes we want to focus on one part and ignore another. Select chains in X, then see what happens when we mod out by chains in A. Just like absolute homology, we take cycles and mod out by boundaries - but in the relative setting. The disk D² relative to its boundary circle S¹ reveals a fundamental pattern. H(X, A) isolates the homological features that are new in X compared to the subspace A. Relative homology connects to absolute homology via the long exact sequence of a pair, giving us computational power. The excision theorem says relative homology is often unchanged by removing parts - a key computational tool.
