LESSON Remainders Introduction What happens when division doesn't come out even? Suppose you need to place 7 books equally onto 2 shelves . Deal them out one at a time, one shelf then the other. Do they split evenly? 2. With and Without Remainders Some divisions split perfectly and leave nothing over; others leave a remainder. Compare these four — split each total into equal groups and watch what's left. The blue dots fill equal groups; an orange dot is a leftover that can't complete another group. When every dot fits into a full group, there's no remainder . 3. Try It: Divide with Remainders Pick a total and a number of groups. The result updates live: blue groups are the equal shares, and a dashed orange group (if any) holds the remainder. One rule ties it all together: as you deal items into groups, the leftover keeps shrinking — and a remainder can never reach the divisor, or it would just form another full group. A remainder is what's left over when division doesn't come out even. Remainders are written as "R" followed by the number (for example, 7 ÷ 2 = 3 R1). The remainder is always smaller than the divisor. If there's no remainder, the division is "even" or "exact."
