What is Division?

Splitting a total into equal parts — division as sharing and as grouping. 1. The Big Idea: Splitting Equally Suppose 12 must be split equally among 3 people . How much does each person receive? Deal the dollars out one at a time, going around the three people in turn, until they are all gone. Each person ends up with the same amount — that final share is the answer. 2. Two Ways to Think About Division The same division, 12 ÷ 3 = 4 , answers two different-sounding questions. In Step 1 we shared 12 into 3 groups and asked how many landed in each. Here we flip it: take the 12 and put 3 in each group — then count how many groups we can make. The animation fills one group of 3 at a time. "I have 12 items. Split them into 3 equal groups. How many in each group?" → 4 in each. "I have 12 items. Put 3 in each group. How many groups?" → 4 groups. Both readings of 12 ÷ 3 land on the same quotient — division covers both questions at once. Because 4 × 3 = 12, dividing 12 by 3 must give back 4. Division undoes multiplication. Whether you ask "how many in each of 3 groups?" or "how many groups of 3?", the arithmetic is identical: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 . The picture differs — 3 full groups vs 4 full groups — but the count you deal out is the same. A workshop has 20 attendees who must be divided into 4 equal groups . How many people are in each group? Deal the 20 people out around the 4 groups, one at a time, until everyone has a place.
