LESSON What is Multiplication? Combining equal groups — multiplication as repeated addition. When you have equal groups — groups that each hold the same number of items — you can multiply to find the total. Here are 3 groups with 4 items in each. The product is the total in all groups 2. Multiplication vs. Repeated Addition Multiplication and repeated addition give the same total — multiplication just states it more compactly. Adding stacks the same number over and over; multiplying records "how many groups" and "how many in each" in one short expression. Count it up: 4 … 8 … 12. You write the 4 three separate times. Read it as "3 groups of 4." One short expression, same answer: 12. Each bar that drops in adds another 4 to the total, and the count rises 4 → 8 → 12. Three identical bars is precisely 3 × 4 — repeated addition and multiplication land on the very same 12. 3. Arrays: Multiplication You Can See An array is a set of objects arranged in rows and columns . Arrays make the structure of multiplication visible: count the rows, count the columns, multiply. Here a grid fills in row by row — 3 rows × 5 columns = 15 . Reading the same array two ways shows why order doesn't change the product: 3 rows of 5 is 15, and 5 columns of 3 is also 15. The symbol that means "multiply" or "groups of." The answer you get when you multiply numbers together. The numbers you multiply — like 3 and 4 in 3 × 4. Objects arranged in rows and columns.
