LESSON Extracting Coefficients Master the techniques for finding [x n ]G(x) from generating functions 1. Partial Fraction Decomposition For rational generating functions G(x) = P(x)/Q(x) , we decompose into simpler fractions with known series expansions. When G(x) is differentiable, we can extract coefficients using the Taylor series formula. This is especially useful for functions like e x , sin(x) , and (1+x) r . The most powerful technique uses complex analysis. The coefficient [x n ]G(x) can be computed as a contour integral around the origin.
