INTRO A Brief History of Cryptography Discover how the art of secret writing evolved from ancient hieroglyphs to the digital age. Click on different points in history to explore how cryptography evolved over thousands of years. One of the simplest ciphers is the Caesar Cipher, used by Julius Caesar himself. Try shifting the letters to decode the secret message. The Cipher vs. Codebreaker Arms Race Throughout history, every new cipher was eventually broken, leading to the invention of more complex methods. Diplomats, military leaders, and spies needed to send secret messages. They developed increasingly complex ciphers to protect their communications. Cryptanalysts worked to break these codes using frequency analysis, pattern recognition, and eventually computers. Each breakthrough forced cipher makers to innovate. This continuous battle led to progressively stronger encryption methods, culminating in the mathematically unbreakable ciphers we use today. During World War II, the Germans used the Enigma machine, which seemed unbreakable due to its astronomical number of possible settings. The Enigma used three (or more) rotating wheels called rotors. Each rotor scrambled letters differently, and they rotated with each keypress, creating a different encryption for every letter. With plugboard settings included, Enigma had over 150 trillion possible configurations!
