LESSON From Outcomes to Numbers Transforming random outcomes into numerical values: discrete random variables, probability mass functions, expected value, and variance. Sample Space: All pairs (i,j) where Random Variable X : Sum of the two dice 2. Probability Mass Function (PMF) The PMF completely characterizes a discrete random variable. For our dice example, because there are 6 ways to roll a sum of 7 out of 36 total outcomes. 3. Expected Value: The Weighted Average Variance quantifies uncertainty. A small variance means values cluster tightly around the mean; a large variance means they're widely dispersed.
