LESSON Fundamental Counting Principles Master the foundational techniques for counting outcomes: when to add (OR scenarios) and when to multiply (AND scenarios). 1. The Addition Principle (OR) Use addition when you have alternative choices where you pick one option from different categories . The key word is OR . 2. The Multiplication Principle (AND) Use multiplication when you have sequential choices where you make multiple decisions in a row . The key word is AND . The critical question: Are you making one choice or multiple choices? Choose one from different categories Make multiple sequential choices Tree diagrams provide a visual way to organize counting problems. Each branch point represents a choice, and paths through the tree represent complete outcomes. Each level represents a decision point Each branch represents a possible choice Each complete path from root to leaf is one outcome Count the leaves to find total outcomes 5. The Importance of Independence The multiplication principle requires that events be independent — your second choice doesn't depend on your first choice. Add when choosing one option from separate categories (OR) Multiply when making multiple sequential choices (AND) Use tree diagrams to visualize complex counting problems Always check for independence before multiplying
