The Frequency Domain

Discover how every signal has two equivalent representations: time and frequency. The Time Domain: How We Normally See Signals Most signals we encounter are naturally described in the time domain. Adjust the frequency slider to see how a sine wave changes over time. The same signal can be viewed in two different ways. Use the buttons below to switch between time domain and frequency domain views. Some operations are much easier in the frequency domain. Try filtering out specific frequencies by clicking on them. Experiment with different signal widths to see how they affect both domains. The Big Picture: When to Use Which View You need to see when events occur, track instantaneous values, or analyze transient behavior. Examples: detecting heartbeat irregularities, timing circuits, observing signal delays. You need to identify frequency components, design filters, or analyze periodic behavior. Examples: audio equalization, noise removal, communication system design, vibration analysis. The Fourier Transform is the mathematical tool that converts between these two views. It doesn't change the signal - it just reveals different aspects of the same information.
