LESSON Angles Formed by Parallel Lines Discover the special angle relationships when a transversal crosses parallel lines 1. A Transversal Crosses Parallel Lines A transversal is a line that crosses two or more other lines. Watch the transversal sweep down across the two parallel lines below: at each crossing it opens up four angles , for eight in total . Those eight angles are what the rest of this lesson is about. 2. The Eight Angles: Interior and Exterior Number the four angles at the top crossing 1–4 and the four at the bottom crossing 5–8 . We split them by whether they sit between the parallel lines or outside them. The animation shades the interior strip, then lights up which angles are interior and which are exterior. Angles 3, 4, 5, 6 — they lie between the two parallel lines. Angles 1, 2, 7, 8 — they lie outside the two parallel lines. Every special pair we name next is built from these positions — "alternate interior," "same-side interior," "alternate exterior," and so on. Getting the interior/exterior labels straight is the whole key to the rules. The animation cycles through the four headline pairs, highlighting the two angles in each and stamping its relationship. Notice the pattern: the three "alternate / corresponding" pairs come out congruent , while the same-side pair is supplementary . Same position at each crossing — e.g. and . Congruent.
