The GRE almost never says "solve for x." It says "compare x to 4" — and that reframe changes how you should attack every problem in this unit. The GRE tests reasoning about x, not just solving for it Most students prep for algebra by grinding "solve for x." But the GRE rarely asks that directly — it hands you an equation, then asks you to compare a quantity to it, or reason about when a solution is possible at all. Watch how one equation actually gets tested. Here's the actual GRE move: it gives you 2x + 5 = 13 , then asks you to compare Quantity A: x against Quantity B: 4 — never "find x." Watch the equation solve itself, then watch the comparison resolve around that answer. Solving is step one. The GRE question lives one level above it — in what you conclude once you know x. Strategy 1: plugging in numbers Sometimes solving algebraically is slower than just testing values. Drag x across 3x − 2 = x + 6 and watch both sides update live — the two bars land on top of each other at exactly one value. That's the GRE's "plug in and check" strategy, made visible. Only one value makes the gap hit zero — that's the solution, found by testing instead of manipulating symbols. Strategy 2: translating English into an equation A bike-rental company charges a flat 40 plus 15 per day.
