LESSON Quantitative Comparison The GRE's own question format — two quantities, four fixed answer choices, and a strategy for resolving any pair. 1. Two Quantities, Four Fixed Choices Every QC question gives you Quantity A and Quantity B — expressions, values, or data — and asks how they relate. There is no fifth choice and the wording never changes: 2. Watching a Comparison Resolve Here's a QC question in the exact format you'll see on the exam: given a constraint, compare Quantity A to Quantity B and pick one of the four choices above. Addition is commutative, so x + 5 and 5 + x are the same expression for every value of x — the constraint x > 0 never even comes into play. Quantity A always equals Quantity B, so the answer is (C) , not (D): the relationship IS determined, and it's equality. 3. The Strategy That Resolves Any QC You almost never need an exact value — QC rewards comparing magnitudes , not computing precisely. Work the four steps below, in order: Use rough mental math and approximation before reaching for exact arithmetic. What actually changes between Quantity A and Quantity B? Focus only on that piece. Try distinct values. One case where A > B and another where A < B means the answer is (D). You have roughly 2 minutes per QC question — use the spare time to double-check. Calculating an exact answer when estimation would already settle it. That wastes time you don't have to spare — QC is about comparing magnitudes, not computing precisely.
