LESSON The On-Screen Calculator When to use it and when not to — a small decision that eats real time across the section. 1. A Tool for Numbers, Not for Thinking The on-screen calculator handles +, −, ×, ÷ , squares, square roots, percentages, and a memory function. That's it. It cannot simplify 3x + 2x , solve 2x = 14 , or figure out what a word problem is even asking. You still set the problem up — the calculator only crunches the numbers once you already know what to compute. Exact arithmetic on numbers you hand it: add, subtract, multiply, divide, √, %, and store one value in memory. Simplify algebra, solve for a variable, graph anything, or decide what the problem is asking. That's all still on you. Watch the same two problems get solved two different ways. Problem A is simple arithmetic; Problem B is messy. The calculator has a fixed "opening cost" — you have to look down, click several buttons, and read the result — no matter how easy the problem is. On the simple problem that overhead makes it the slower path. On the messy problem, the same overhead is nothing next to the mental effort it saves. Problem A: 3+5 — mental math wins, ~0.5s vs ~5s on the calculator (10× slower) Problem B: 1347+8923-456 — the calculator wins, and it's error-free On a 47-minute section, opening the calculator for 20 calculations you could've done in your head costs 3–5 minutes total — time better spent on the harder problems still ahead of you.
