LESSON Queuing Models - Mathematical Modeling Unit 4: Probabilistic Models - Mathematical Modeling Queuing theory is the mathematical study of waiting lines (queues). It provides models for predicting queue behavior and optimizing service systems where customers arrive randomly and wait for service. "The science of waiting in line" Developed by Danish engineer A.K. Erlang in the early 1900s for telephone network design, queuing theory is now used in: Call centers and customer service Hospital emergency rooms and healthcare Computer networks and data centers Manufacturing and production lines Traffic flow and transportation Queuing Systems in Everyday Life Queues surround us every day. Understanding their behavior helps optimize resources and reduce waiting times. Customers arrive, wait in queue, receive service, then depart Common Examples of Queuing Systems Supermarket: Customers arrive, wait in checkout lines, get served by cashiers Bank: Customers take a number, wait in a single queue for multiple tellers Website: HTTP requests arrive, wait in buffers, get processed by servers ER: Patients arrive, get triaged, wait for available doctors Components of a Queuing System Every queuing system has three fundamental components: Arrival Process: How customers arrive to the system Arrival rate (lambda): average customers per unit time Interarrival time distribution (often exponential)
