Master the different ways to express partial derivatives in partial differential equations The most compact notation uses subscripts to denote which variable we're differentiating with respect to. This is especially popular in physics and applied mathematics. This notation makes it explicit which variable is the independent variable and emphasizes the "ratio of infinitesimals" interpretation. The symbol is the rounded "del" symbol. Note: For smooth functions (C), the order of differentiation doesn't matter: Operator notation treats differentiation as an operation and introduces special symbols for common differential operators with geometric meaning. Gradient u: Points in the direction of steepest increase of u Laplacian u: Measures how much u differs from its average in a neighborhood Divergence F: Measures the "outflow" of vector field F at a point For higher-order derivatives and theoretical work, multi-index notation provides a compact way to express derivatives of any order. Multi-index Notation Explained A multi-index is a tuple of non-negative integers = (₁, ₂, ..., ₙ).
