LESSON Architectural Blueprints & Scale A blueprint is a room shrunk by a fixed ratio. Learn to multiply by the scale to get the real size — and divide to go back. This bedroom's long wall is drawn 10 inches on the blueprint, at a scale of 1 inch = 4 feet . Every blueprint inch stands for 4 real feet, so to find the real wall we stretch each inch out 4×. Watch the drawn wall grow into the wall you'd actually build. Scale: 1 blueprint inch stands for 4 real feet Real length = blueprint length × scale 2. Every Dimension Uses the Same Scale A scale drawing keeps the room's shape because both sides shrink by the same ratio. The blueprint bedroom is 10 in × 5 in . Apply "× 4 ft/in" to each side and the little drawing blooms into the real room — same proportions, just 4× bigger in every direction. Length:width is on paper and for real. Shape is preserved. Doors, windows, closets — every measurement on the sheet gets the same × 4. The 10 in × 5 in drawing becomes a 40 ft × 20 ft room. The proportions never changed — only the units and the size did, both scaled by the same factor of 4. 3. Area Grows by the Square of the Scale Here's the trap. Lengths scale by 4, but area scales by 4²= 16 , because area multiplies two scaled lengths together. A single blueprint square inch becomes a 4 ft × 4 ft tile — that's 16 square feet , not 4. Watch one paper square expand into its real-floor tile. On paper: the bedroom covers square inches.
