Picture your data as weights on a seesaw. The one spot where it balances is the mean. The one spot where the data balances You already know how to find an average: add up the numbers and divide by how many there are. But what is that number, really? Here's the picture that makes it click. Lay your data values out as equal weights on a beam, and exactly one spot will hold them in perfect balance — no tilt, no lean. That spot is the mean. These are four test scores — 60, 70, 80, and 90 — each an equal weight on the beam. Watch the fulcrum slide along until the beam goes level. Where it stops is the balance point of this data. The beam balances at 75 — and that is exactly (60 + 70 + 80 + 90) ÷ 4. The average is the balance point. Slide the fulcrum until it balances Same four scores. Drag the fulcrum (or use the slider) and feel the beam tip toward whichever side is heavier. The net pull readout adds up how hard each weight tugs: values to the right pull the beam down on the right, values to the left pull it down on the left. Hunt for the spot where those pulls cancel to zero — that level spot is the mean. Net pull hits zero only at one spot. That spot is the mean, 75 — the same balance point the animation settled on. Every value pulls the balance toward it
