Two numbers, one exact spot on the grid. Learn to plot a point, then read the four quadrants like a map. How two numbers pin down one spot A coordinate plane is just two number lines crossing: a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis , meeting at the origin (0, 0). Once you have them, any single point in the whole plane can be named by just two numbers — and finding it is a two-step recipe you can do every time. Watch the point (3, 2) get built. The rule is always the same: the first number says how far to move along the x-axis (right if positive, left if negative); the second says how far to move up or down from there. First the x-step, then the y-step — and you land on the point. First number = sideways move, second number = up/down move. The order never changes: (x, y). The two axes carve the plane into four quadrants The crossing axes split everything into four regions, called quadrants , numbered I, II, III, IV counterclockwise from the top-right. Each one has its own fingerprint of signs. Drag the point around and watch which quadrant lights up — and notice the pattern of plus and minus signs in its coordinates. On an axis a coordinate is 0, so axis points belong to no quadrant — they sit on the border. Read a point's address straight off the axes
