Why the logos you remember are built on a mirror line or a turn — and how to design with each. 1. A Balanced Mark From a Mirror Start with a rough half-motif on the left of a line. Reflect it across that vertical line and the two halves lock into a balanced whole. The line is the axis of symmetry : every point on the right is the mirror of a matching point on the left, the same distance from the axis. A point and its mirror sit at equal distances from the axis 2. Line Symmetry: How Many Mirror Lines? A mark can have more than one axis of symmetry. To test a candidate line, fold the shape along it: if every part lands exactly on a matching part, it is a line of symmetry. Watch each candidate line get tested on a square — some fold perfectly, some don't. Folding left onto right matches. Most wordmark-style logos have this one. Folding top onto bottom matches when the design is also balanced up–down. A square adds two diagonal mirror lines — four in total. If the fold leaves parts hanging off the edge, that line is not an axis of symmetry. A square has 4 lines of symmetry (vertical, horizontal, both diagonals). An equilateral triangle has 3 .
