Two classes can post the exact same average and still tell completely different stories. The mean alone hides half the picture. Two classes, one average — and a hidden difference Ms. Chen and Mr. Park give their classes the same test, out of 10. Both classes average a 6. If the average were the whole story, the two classes would be interchangeable. Watch what the average quietly leaves out. Each dot is one student's score on the number line. Press play: both clouds of dots get weighed on a balance, and the pointer settles on the very same spot — a mean of 6 — for both classes, even though one cloud is huddled together and the other is flung wide. Same balance point, wildly different reach. The mean tells you where the data centers — never how far it spreads. Pull the scores apart — the mean won't move Here are 12 scores balanced on a mean of 6. Drag the spread dial: the dots fan out from the center or pull back in, but the mean (the red marker) stays nailed to 6 the whole time. Watch the range and standard deviation climb — those are the numbers that finally measure what the mean can't. Same mean, any spread you like. At the dial's far right you've recreated Mr. Park's class exactly: scores from 2 to 10, still averaging 6. Why spread can matter more than the average You're packing for a weekend trip.
