Symmetry Detector

A line of symmetry is a fold line where the two halves land exactly on each other. Some shapes have none, some have one, and some have many — let's go find them. What makes a line a line of symmetry? Symmetry is everywhere — in letters, logos, leaves, and buildings — and the whole idea rests on one simple test you can do with a piece of paper. There's nothing to take on faith here: watch the test happen once, then run it yourself on shape after shape. Here is a square with a line drawn down its middle. Watch the left half fold across that line: it lands exactly on the right half, edge for edge and corner for corner. When the two halves match perfectly, that fold line is a line of symmetry . If the folded half covers the other half perfectly, the fold line is a line of symmetry. If it sticks out or leaves a gap, it isn't. Hunt for the fold lines yourself Pick a shape, then drag the slider to swing a candidate line around its center. At every angle the shape reflects across the line — when the reflection lands back on the shape, you've found a real fold line and it locks in green. Sweep all the way around and count how many a shape has. (Drag the slider to begin.)
