LESSON Variables as Placeholders A letter in math is a box that holds a number — sometimes one you must find, sometimes one you choose, sometimes any number at all. Sometimes a variable stands for one specific number we need to find — a value hiding inside the letter. Think of x as a sealed box: the equation tells you enough to figure out exactly what number is inside. What single number must go in the box to make this true? To undo the + 5, subtract 5 from both sides: x = 12 - 5 . In a formula, variables stand for values that can change . The letters l and w are slots: pour in any positive numbers and the same formula gives you the matching answer. Area of a rectangle = length × width Same formula, different values Substitute numbers for the slots and multiply: Sometimes a variable stands for any number at all , used to state a rule that is always true no matter what you pick. The commutative property of addition says the order in which you add two numbers never changes the sum. No matter which numbers replace a and b , both sides land on the same sum: The same letter can play three different roles.
