Reference Angles

The acute angle to the x-axis that unlocks every trig value, in any quadrant, from the ones you already know. Drop a terminal side anywhere on the circle. The reference angle is the acute angle between that terminal side and the nearest part of the x-axis — always swung the short way to the horizontal, never to the y-axis. Watch the terminal side at fold down to the nearest x-axis — the gap it sweeps is the reference angle . Which way you measure to the x-axis depends on the quadrant. As the terminal side sweeps around, the rule for switches at each axis. The four cases cover the whole circle: 3. Why Reference Angles Matter Here is the payoff. The trig value of any angle equals the trig value of its reference angle, give or take a sign set by the quadrant: value of the angle value of its reference angle The point at sits at the same height as the point at — just mirrored across the y-axis. Same height means the same sine; the mirror only flips the x-coordinate, so picks up the minus sign instead. The sign comes straight from the quadrant. One Reference Angle, Four Angles Because the reference angle only measures the gap to the x-axis, a single acute angle is shared by one angle in each quadrant.
