Interpreting Linear Functions in Context Understanding slope and y-intercept in real-world scenarios The Key: Slope and Intercept Have Meaning On the SAT, you're not just solving abstract equations. You're interpreting what they mean in a real context. Every problem tells a story. m = RATE OF CHANGE (slope) | b = STARTING VALUE (y-intercept) Slope tells you how much y changes for every 1 unit change in x. The units matter! The y-intercept is the value of y when x = 0. This is often the "starting point" or "initial value." Type 1: "What does [number] represent?" Identify whether the number is the slope or y-intercept, then explain what it means in context. Type 2: "Find the value after..." Plug in the given value for the variable and calculate. Type 3: "When will the value be...?" Set the output equal to the target and solve for the variable. Finding the Equation from Context Given a situation, write the equation: Read the problem twice: Once for understanding, once to identify the slope and intercept. Units matter: 25 per month is different from 25 per year. Write units in your work. Negative slope: When something decreases (cost going down, population declining), the slope is negative. Verify with reality: Does your answer make sense? If a car is worth -1000 after 5 years, something's wrong.
