Structure in Expressions & Patterns Recognize Hidden Patterns on the SAT The SAT doesn't just test computation—it tests whether you can recognize patterns and structures hidden in complex expressions. This is how you solve hard problems quickly. Perfect square trinomials in disguise Difference of squares hiding in an expression Substitution tricks to simplify complex expressions Factoring patterns in non-obvious places Substitution: The Secret Weapon When an expression looks complex, try substituting a variable to reveal structure. Example 1: Recognize Perfect Square Example 2: Difference of Squares in Disguise Expression has a repeated part or pattern Exponents suggest a "quadratic-like" structure Denominator and numerator share a common part SAT Structure Recognition Tips If you see , this is a perfect square trinomial.
