SAT-Style: Interpreting Slope and Intercept Understanding what the numbers mean in real-world context On the SAT, you'll be given a linear equation in context and asked: "What does [number] represent?" "What does the slope mean in this situation?" "What is the y-intercept and what does it tell us?" Worked Example 1: Gym Membership Worked Example 3: Distance Function Look at what multiplies the variable. That's your rate. Add appropriate units. That's the value when the variable = 0. Usually the "starting" or "initial" value. Find the coefficient of the variable. Watch for negative slopes! This is usually the slope. Positive = increase, Negative = decrease. Rewrite in y = mx + b form if needed: It makes slope and y-intercept obvious. Watch signs: A negative slope means decrease, not increase. Units matter: "Slope = 50" might be "50 dollars per year" in context. Reasonableness check: Does your interpretation make sense? A car's value shouldn't increase by 10,000 per year in depreciation.
