LESSON Measures of Central Tendency Understanding mean, median, and mode to describe the center of data Imagine you're describing a group of friends' heights, test scores, or ages. Instead of listing every single value, you want one number that represents the "typical" or "central" value. This is what measures of central tendency do—they summarize a dataset with a single representative value. The mean is what most people call the "average." You add up all values and divide by how many values there are. Think of it as the balance point—if your data were weights on a seesaw, the mean is where you'd place the fulcrum to balance it perfectly. 3 The Median: The Middle Value The median is the middle value when data is arranged in order. Half the values are below it, half are above it. If you line up all your friends by height, the median is the height of the person in the middle. 4 The Mode: The Most Common Value The mode is the value that appears most frequently in your dataset. In a survey of favorite colors, the mode would be the color chosen most often. A dataset can have one mode, multiple modes, or no mode at all! 5 Why Do We Need Three Measures? Different measures tell different stories about the same data. Let's see what happens when we have an outlier—an extreme value that's very different from the rest. Example: Five friends' weekly allowances: Each measure has its ideal use case. Understanding when to use each one is crucial for accurate data analysis.
