How hypothesis testing determines which medicines reach pharmacy shelves The Journey from Lab to Pharmacy Every medication you see at the pharmacy has undergone years of rigorous statistical testing. Before the FDA approves a new drug, pharmaceutical companies must prove through hypothesis testing that their medicine is both safe and effective. This isn't just about p-values and significance levels—it's about life and death decisions. Get it wrong, and either harmful drugs reach patients, or beneficial treatments are wrongly rejected. The Three Phases of Clinical Trials Drug development follows a structured process, with each phase testing different hypotheses: Each phase uses hypothesis testing to make go/no-go decisions. The most critical is Phase III, where we test if the drug performs better than a placebo (inactive treatment) in a large, diverse patient population. Setting Up the Hypothesis Test For a drug trial comparing a new medication to a placebo, we establish our hypotheses: The drug has no effect (same as placebo) The drug is more effective than placebo Where represents the mean improvement in patient outcomes.
