What is Topology?
Topology · Axiom Academy
The mathematics of shape, space, and continuity Imagine you're a mathematician who doesn't care about distances or angles. Instead, you ask: What properties of shapes survive stretching, bending, and twisting? While geometry cares about precise measurements, topology cares only about properties that don't change under continuous deformations. Topology has evolved into two major areas, each with its own powerful tools and questions. Studies the fundamental nature of spaces using open sets , closeness, and continuity. Builds the language of topology. Converts topological questions into algebraic problems we can solve with groups, rings, and homology. Topology isn't just abstract mathematics - it has powerful applications across science, technology, and data analysis. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) finds patterns and structure in high-dimensional data. Quantum field theory, string theory, and condensed matter rely on topological concepts. Configuration spaces and path planning use topological methods.
