EXAMPLE Finding Resultant of Two Forces Learn to resolve forces into components and calculate the resultant magnitude and direction using trigonometry. Excellent work! You've successfully found the resultant of two forces. Here's what we learned: Component Method: Breaking forces into horizontal (x) and vertical (y) components makes complex force problems manageable using basic trigonometry. Cosine for Horizontal: The x-component is always found using F·cos(θ), where θ is measured from the positive x-axis. Sine for Vertical: The y-component is always found using F·sin(θ), giving us the vertical contribution of the force. Sum Components Separately: Add all x-components together and all y-components together before finding the resultant. Pythagorean Theorem: The resultant magnitude R = √(Rₓ² + Rᵧ²) combines the perpendicular components. Direction Matters: Use θ = arctan(Rᵧ/Rₓ) to find the angle, and always check which quadrant your resultant is in! This component method is fundamental in physics and engineering. You can use this same approach for any number of forces at any angles!
