FORMULA SHEET Equations and Inequalities Reference The properties, procedures, and notations for solving linear equations and inequalities. Solving Linear Equations: A Step-by-Step Guide Simplify each side: use the Distributive Property to clear parentheses and combine like terms on each side independently. Collect variable terms: use addition or subtraction to move all variable terms to one side. Isolate the variable term: use addition or subtraction to move all constant terms to the opposite side. Isolate the variable: use multiplication or division so the coefficient of the variable becomes 1. Representing Solution Sets (Inequalities) "AND" inequalities (intersection) The solution must satisfy both inequalities. The graph is the overlapping region. Graph: a segment between -6 and 4 , with a closed circle at -6 and an open circle at 4 . The solution must satisfy at least one of the inequalities. The graph includes all shaded regions. Graph: two separate rays — one starts at -3 with an open circle and goes left; the other starts at 2 with a closed circle and goes right.
