LESSON AP Exam Format Overview Know what to expect on exam day The AP Calculus exam is a comprehensive assessment of your calculus knowledge. It's designed to test both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency across the entire curriculum. Part A: No Calculator (30 minutes) These questions focus on conceptual understanding and algebraic manipulation. You need to know limit definitions, derivative rules, and integration techniques cold. Part B: With Calculator (45 minutes) These questions often involve real data, numerical integration, or problems where approximation is needed. Your calculator is essential. Total Section I Score: 45 points (weighted 50% of final score) These are multi-part problems requiring written justification. You must show all work and explain your reasoning. Part B: With Calculator (60 minutes) These questions often involve applications, real-world data, or problems where numerical computation helps. Total Section II Score: 45 points (weighted 50% of final score) Free Response Question Scoring Each FRQ is scored on a scale of 0-9 points. Scoring rubrics evaluate: You identify the right approach and communicate understanding. You apply the strategy and perform correct calculations. You explain your reasoning clearly and use proper notation. Your raw score on the exam is converted to an AP Grade (1-5): College Credit: Most colleges grant credit for a score of 3 or higher. A 4 or 5 often grants both credit and advanced placement.
