LESSON Calculator Policy & TI-84 Tips Master your most important tool on the AP Exam The AP Calculus exam permits graphing calculators. The most common choice is the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus (or CE) , but other models are allowed: ✓ TI-84 Plus / TI-84 Plus CE (most popular) Some devices are NOT allowed . These are strictly prohibited: Smartphones, tablets, or computers Calculators with QWERTY keyboards Calculators with electronic writing surfaces Wireless devices or devices with internet access Calculators with any form of communication capability Your calculator is your friend during the calculator-allowed portions of the exam: ✓ Section I, Part B (45 minutes) Multiple choice questions where calculator use is expected. These often involve numerical approximation, real data, or complex functions. ✓ Section II, Part B (60 minutes) Free response questions. You may use your calculator, but you must show all work and explain your reasoning. When You CANNOT Use a Calculator These portions are calculator-free. You must do all work by hand: ✗ Section I, Part A (30 minutes) 15 multiple choice questions. These test conceptual understanding and algebraic manipulation. Know your rules cold. ✗ Section II, Part A (30 minutes) 2 free response questions. You must write clear solutions and show all work. Mastery of the derivative and integral rules is essential.
