LESSON Free Response Question Strategy Master the art of writing clear, high-scoring solutions Free Response Questions are the heart of AP Calculus. Unlike multiple choice, FRQs reward clear thinking and mathematical communication. A well-written FRQ response shows not just that you got the answer, but that you understand why your answer is correct. There are 6 FRQs total on the exam (2 without calculator, 4 with calculator). Each is worth 9 points, totaling 54 points for Section II. Combined with Section I (45 points), your total raw score is out of 108. Use this systematic approach to tackle any FRQ: Read the entire problem twice. Underline key information. Identify what's given and what you need to find. Before writing your solution, sketch out your approach. What rules or theorems apply? What steps will you take? Write out all steps. Don't skip algebra. Use proper mathematical notation. Show every calculation. Explain why you're doing each step. Reference theorems and rules. Connect the math to the problem. Does your answer make sense? Check units. Verify with a calculation or different method if possible. Most FRQs follow predictable patterns. Familiarize yourself with these archetypes: You're given a graph or need to sketch one. You must interpret features (extrema, concavity, asymptotes). Apply derivative/integral rules to a function. Show all work. Explain what your answer means in context. Explain why something is true or defend a claim using calculus reasoning.
