REAL WORLD Speed Limits & Velocity How limits connect to measuring instantaneous speed You're driving and suddenly a speed camera flashes. Did you speed? Your speedometer shows 35 mph, but the speed limit is 25 mph. But here's the problem: your speedometer reading is instantaneous (at one moment). How do we actually measure that? Average vs. Instantaneous Speed If you travel 100 miles in 2 hours, your average speed is 50 mph: But your speed wasn't constant! It was sometimes 60 mph, sometimes 40 mph. To find your speed at a specific moment (say, t = 1.5 hours), we need calculus. Using Limits to Find Instantaneous Velocity Let be your position (in miles) at time t (in hours). To find your velocity at time t = a, we look at average velocities over smaller and smaller time intervals: This is the limit of average velocities as the time interval shrinks to zero! Modern speedometers work exactly like this. They measure position very frequently (hundreds of times per second) and compute limits to show instantaneous speed. The speed you see is the limit of average speeds over infinitesimal time intervals. Speed cameras use this: they measure distance at two moments and compute the limit Your car's computer constantly uses limits to estimate real-time velocity Medical devices measure instantaneous rates of change (heart rate, blood flow) using limits Spacecraft trajectory control relies on instantaneous velocity calculations
