How derivatives measure change in the real world A ball is dropped from a building. Its height (in meters) after t seconds is given by: The derivative of this function gives us the velocity (rate of change of height with respect to time). Interpret: The velocity is . The negative sign indicates downward motion. The ball is moving downward at 19.6 m/s after 2 seconds. Derivative = Rate: The derivative tells us how fast something is changing Negative = Decreasing: A negative derivative means the quantity is decreasing Units Matter: The derivative units are "output units per input unit" (m/s, /year, etc.) Physics Connection: Velocity is the rate of change of position. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity (second derivative)
