Real World: Population Growth Rate
AP Calculus · Axiom Academy
REAL WORLD Population Growth Rate Exponential models and derivatives in biology Scenario: Bacterial Population A bacterial culture grows exponentially. The population (in thousands) after t hours is: The derivative gives us the growth rate - how fast the population is increasing at any moment. Interpretation: The population grows at thousand organisms per hour. At t = 1 hour, the population is growing at a rate of 2e ≈ 5.44 thousand organisms per hour . Exponential Growth: Many natural phenomena (bacteria, radioactive decay, viral spread) follow exponential models Early Detection: The derivative tells us how fast things are growing NOW, crucial for early pandemic detection Doubling Time: Knowing the growth rate helps predict when populations will double Resource Planning: Schools, hospitals, and utilities use growth models to plan for future demand
