Basic Combination Examples

EXAMPLE Basic Combination Examples Master the fundamentals of combinations through real-world problems Excellent work! You've completed all five combination examples. Here's what we learned: Order Doesn't Matter: Combinations are used when the order of selection is irrelevant. A committee of Alice, Bob, and Charlie is the same as Charlie, Alice, and Bob. The Combination Formula: Use C(n,r) = n! / (r!(n-r)!) to calculate the number of ways to choose r items from n items without regard to order. Real-World Applications: Combinations appear everywhere - from committee formation and menu selections to card games and scheduling decisions. Computational Growth: Notice how combination values can grow dramatically. C(52,5) = 2,598,960 shows why poker hands are so varied! Complementary Counting: C(7,4) = C(7,3) = 35. Choosing 4 days to work is equivalent to choosing 3 days to take off. These fundamental combination problems form the foundation for more advanced counting techniques. Practice identifying when order matters (permutations) versus when it doesn't (combinations)!
