Wavelet Applications

Exploring real-world applications of wavelet transforms across science and engineering 1. Signal Denoising: Thresholding Wavelet Coefficients One of the most powerful applications of wavelets is noise removal. By decomposing a noisy signal into wavelet coefficients, we can identify and remove noise components while preserving the essential signal structure. The Process: Transform the signal into the wavelet domain, apply a threshold to suppress small coefficients (which typically represent noise), then reconstruct the signal using only the significant coefficients. 2. Image Compression: JPEG 2000 JPEG 2000 uses wavelet transforms instead of traditional DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) to achieve superior compression ratios with better visual quality, especially at lower bit rates. Key Advantage: Wavelets provide multiresolution decomposition, allowing progressive image transmission and region-of-interest coding. The transform concentrates energy into fewer coefficients, enabling efficient compression. 3. Edge Detection and Feature Extraction Wavelets excel at identifying discontinuities and sharp transitions in signals and images. The wavelet coefficients naturally highlight edges and features at different scales. Multiscale Analysis: By examining wavelet coefficients across different resolution levels, we can detect both fine details (high frequencies) and coarse structures (low frequencies) simultaneously. 4.
