REAL WORLD Image Processing with Fourier Analysis How Instagram filters and Photoshop effects actually work How Do Image Filters Really Work? Ever wondered how Instagram applies a blur filter in milliseconds? Or how Photoshop detects edges in images? The secret isn't magic—it's mathematics. Specifically, it's the 2D Fourier Transform , the same mathematical tool that powers image compression (JPEG), medical imaging (MRI), and even facial recognition. The Big Idea: Every image can be decomposed into a combination of different spatial frequencies —just like how sound can be broken into different pitches. By manipulating these frequencies, we can blur, sharpen, detect edges, and perform countless other transformations. In this module, we'll explore how 2D Fourier analysis turns image processing from an art into a science. You'll see exactly what happens "under the hood" when you click that blur or sharpen button. Before we can apply Fourier analysis, we need to understand what an image really is mathematically. An image is a 2D discrete signal —a grid of pixels, where each pixel has an intensity value. Sample Image Grid (Simplified) Each square represents a pixel with a specific intensity (grayscale value). This is how computers "see" images—as numerical data arranged in a grid.
