The Nash Equilibrium: A Revolutionary Idea Match each concept to understand what made Nash's equilibrium so powerful. Let's understand the formal definition of Nash equilibrium. A strategy profile (s₁*, s₂*, ..., sₙ*) is a Nash equilibrium if, for every player i : for all possible strategies sᵢ of player i . A Nash equilibrium is reached when every player is making the best choice they can, given what all other players are doing . No player can improve their payoff by unilaterally changing their strategy. Two prisoners must decide whether to cooperate or defect. The Nash equilibrium is for both to defect, even though both cooperating would give them better outcomes. Why? Because given that the other player will defect, defecting is each player's best response. This shows how Nash equilibrium captures rational behavior, even when it leads to suboptimal outcomes! Explore how Nash's work transformed economics and earned him the highest honor. "For their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games."
