The Seven Bridges of Königsberg The puzzle that launched graph theory and changed mathematics forever In 1736, the Prussian city of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) faced a curious puzzle that would change mathematics forever. In 1736, mathematician Leonhard Euler did something revolutionary: he realized the physical layout didn't matter. Only the connections did. Euler discovered a beautiful theorem: a path that crosses every edge exactly once (called an Eulerian path) exists only under specific conditions. The Birth of Graph Theory and Topology Euler's solution created an entirely new field of mathematics. Graph theory now powers computer networks, social media, GPS navigation, and artificial intelligence. By focusing on connections rather than distances, Euler founded topology—the study of properties that remain unchanged under continuous transformations. Euler showed that by stripping away irrelevant details and focusing on essential structure, impossible problems become solvable. This approach revolutionized mathematics.
