EXAMPLE Root Estimation Examples Worked examples of estimating square and cube roots mentally Excellent work! You've learned powerful mental math techniques for estimating roots. Here's what we covered: Bracketing Strategy: Always identify the perfect squares (or cubes) on either side of your target number Proximity Matters: The closer your target is to a known perfect power, the better your estimate will be Square Root Patterns: For √50, knowing 49 = 7² and 64 = 8², we estimated just over 7 (actual: 7.07) Cube Root Patterns: For ∛30, knowing 27 = 3³ and 64 = 4³, we estimated just over 3 (actual: 3.11) Larger Numbers: For √200, using 196 = 14² and 225 = 15², we estimated about 14.1 (actual: 14.14) Mental Efficiency: With practice, these estimates become instant and don't require calculations The key to mastering root estimation is memorizing perfect squares (1-20) and perfect cubes (1-10). Once you know these landmarks, you can quickly estimate any root by identifying which landmarks it falls between!
