Fast mental math starts with a simple switch: stop counting numbers and start seeing them. Turn a quantity into a picture — a group, a frame, a rectangle — and the answer is often just there. Drop a handful of coins on a table and you can't tell how many there are at a glance — you have to count them one by one, and it is slow and easy to lose your place. But arrange those same coins into small, familiar groups and the number almost jumps out at you. That shift, from counting to seeing, is what mental math is built on. Watch a scattered heap of dots gather into four little groups of five. You never counted — the moment they are grouped, you simply see . This instant recognition of small groups has a name — subitizing — and grouping is how you stretch it to bigger numbers. Group into tens to read big numbers A ten-frame is just two rows of five. Slide the dial to set a count, and the dots fill the frames from the top left. You never count them one by one — you read off the full tens and the few left over. Two full frames and three more — you see 23 without ever counting to it. Line a number's dots up into a full rectangle and its structure appears. The rectangle's two sides are a pair of factors, and is the number itself. Pick a number, then click it again to fold the same dots into a different rectangle. A number with many rectangles has many factors; one that only makes a single long row is prime.
