The Halving Strategy
Mental Math · Axiom Academy
Master division by powers of 2 through repeated halving Halving means dividing a number by 2. When you halve a number, you split it into two equal parts. This is one of the most fundamental operations in mental math! Powers of 2 are numbers you get by doubling: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. When we divide by these numbers, we can use repeated halving! To divide by 4, we just halve twice! Let's see how 80 ÷ 4 works using the halving strategy. 4 Dividing by 8: Halve Three Times To divide by 8, we halve three times! Watch how 96 ÷ 8 becomes easy with successive halving. 5 Dividing by 16: Halve Four Times To divide by 16, we halve four times! Let's solve 160 ÷ 16 using repeated halving. Notice the pattern: the number of times you halve equals the power of 2 you're dividing by! You've mastered the halving strategy for division! Practice halving until it becomes automatic. This strategy makes division by powers of 2 incredibly fast!
