LESSON Understanding Number Relationships Numbers live in a web of connections — near-doubles, partners, halves and doubles, distance — and seeing the right one turns a hard calculation into an easy one. 1. Near-Doubles — Lean on the Double Next Door You might not have 7 + 8 memorized, but you almost certainly know the double 7 + 7 = 14 . Since 8 is just 7 + 1 , the answer is one short step away: add the double you already know, then the leftover 1 . The problem — the two numbers are neighbors Lean on the double 7 + 7 = 14, then add the leftover 1 Every small number has a partner that completes a ten: 8 and 2 , 7 and 3 , 6 and 4 . To add across a ten, give one number just enough to reach 10 , then add whatever is left. For 8 + 5 , hand 8 its partner 2 — that uses part of the 5 and leaves 3 , so it becomes a clean ten plus three. Partners of 100 work the same way The pairs that make 100 — like 70 & 30 or 65 & 35 — let you round up to a hundred. So 65 + 40 becomes 65 + 35 + 5 = 105. 3. Halve One, Double the Other In a product you can halve one factor and double the other without changing the answer — the amount is only rearranged. That turns an awkward multiply into an easy one. looks like work, but halve the 14 to 7 and double the 5 to 10 , and it is simply . Dividing one factor by 2 and multiplying the other by 2 cancel out — the same 70, reshaped. Halving turns a times-five into a times-ten, which is instant: 24 × 5 = 12 × 10 = 120 and 18 × 5 = 9 × 10 = 90 .
