Quick tax estimation helps you: Budget accurately - Know if you have enough money before checkout Compare prices - Factor in tax when deciding between stores Catch errors - Notice if the register calculates tax incorrectly Plan purchases - Stay within your spending limit In this lesson, you'll learn lightning-fast mental math techniques to estimate sales tax without reaching for a calculator! Sales tax rates vary by location. Most states charge between 4% and 10% sales tax. Let's look at common rates: Know your local tax rate! Once you memorize it, estimating tax becomes lightning-fast. Most cities have rates between 6% and 9%. The easiest mental math trick: 10% of any number is just moving the decimal point left once! To find 10% of any price, move the decimal point one place to the left: Once you know 10%, you can estimate any tax rate: Strategy #2: The Rounding Method For quick estimates, round prices to the nearest 5 or 10, then calculate tax on the rounded amount. Step 3: 6% ≈ half of 10% plus a little = 3 Actual total: 50.87 — Your estimate is close enough for budgeting!
