Restaurant Tipping
Mental Math · Axiom Academy
Master the mental math tricks waiters use to calculate tips instantly - no calculator needed! You just finished a great meal at a restaurant. The bill arrives, and you want to leave a tip for the excellent service. But calculating percentages in your head can be tricky... or is it? The service was great, so you want to leave a 20% tip. What's the fastest way to calculate it? Here's the secret: 10% is incredibly easy to calculate - just move the decimal point one place to the left! Once you know 10%, you can quickly find any other common tip percentage. Try different bill amounts! Notice how the pattern stays the same - once you find 10%, everything else becomes simple multiplication or addition. Now it's your turn! Your bill is 65.00 and you want to leave a 18% tip . What's the fastest mental math approach? How would you calculate 18% of 65? When you use the 10% trick, you're actually using the distributive property and decimal place value to break down complex percentages into simple operations. Bill: 40.00 Tip: 40.00 × 0.20 = 40.00 × (20/100) = 8.00 Requires multiplication and understanding of decimals Bill: 40.00 10% = 4.00 (shift decimal) 20% = 4.00 × 2 = 8.00 Just division by 10 (easy!) and doubling! Common Tip Percentages Made Easy: 18%: 10% + 10% - (10% ÷ 5) or 20% - 2% Decimal Division by 10 Moving the decimal point one place left divides by 10. This is the foundation for the 10% trick: 40.00 becomes 4.00 instantly!
