LESSON Dimensional Analysis - Mathematical Modeling A Powerful Technique for Checking Equations, Deriving Relationships, and Simplifying Problems Dimensional analysis is a method for analyzing the relationships between physical quantities by examining their dimensions —the fundamental types of physical quantities (like length, mass, and time) that make up derived quantities. Check whether equations are physically meaningful Derive relationships between variables without solving equations Simplify complex problems by reducing the number of variables Guide experimental design and data analysis All physical quantities can be expressed in terms of a small set of fundamental dimensions . The most common system uses: We write the dimensions of a quantity Q using bracket notation: where the exponents can be positive, negative, or zero. The Principle of Dimensional Homogeneity Every term in a physically meaningful equation must have the same dimensions . If A = B + C , then [A] = [B] = [C] . Is the kinematic equation dimensionally consistent? First term: [v_0 t] = (L T^ -1 )(T) = L ✓ All terms have dimension L . The equation is dimensionally consistent! Dimensional consistency is necessary but not sufficient for an equation to be correct. The equation x = 2v_0t + at^2 is dimensionally consistent but physically wrong!
